AUBURN, Ala. -- A three-run sixth inning for Auburn proved the difference as the Tigers (10-0) slipped by Georgia State (5-6), 4-2, on Wednesday night.
After the Panthers tied the contest at one in the top of the fifth, the Tiger batters found life in the bottom half of the sixth. Reliever Alana Thomas recorded the first two outs quickly but the Tigers went on a two-out rally, scoring three runs. After a pair of walks put runners at first and second, an Amber Harrison double down the left field line, plated two. After Harrison reached third on a wild pitch, Kyndall White's double scored Harrison. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam came in to relieve Thomas and recorded the final out of the inning.
Sophomore pitcher McCall Langford turned in a strong effort, going five innings, allowing only two hits and a run while striking out seven batters. After giving up a single run in the first, Langford settled down and sat down nine-straight Tiger' batters before being taken out of the contest.
GSU outhit the Tigers seven to four. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they also left seven runners on base. GSU opened the game with runners at first and second before faltering, while the third inning saw runners at first and third. However, the fourth inning was the toughest as the Panthers had the bases loaded with one out before a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
The Panthers finally were able to strike paydirt in the fifth. After freshman Jessica Clifton hit a single and reached second on a wild pitch, sophomore Whitney Phillips laid down a sac bunt that advanced Clifton to third. Lauren Jones' bunt single scored Clifton to tie the game at one.
GSU tried to put together a rally in the seventh, as Clifton tripled to center field, scoring pinch hitter Brenna Morrissey with one out. A pair of outs ended the contest for the Panthers.
At the plate the combo of Clifton and Phillips, batting one and two in the lineup, went 5-for-6 with one RBI, a triple, a walk and one run scored.
The game marked the first for interim head coach Roger Kincaid.
GSU returns to action this weekend when they travel to Woodstock, Ga., to battle five teams in the Phyliss Rafter Memorial hosted by Kennesaw State.
