Softball Splits Two Games With Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Georgia State softball (4-2) team split a double-header with in-state rival Georgia Southern (4-3) on the Eagle's home field Wednesday afternoon.

After the big run totals during the season-opening GSU First Pitch Classic, runs were at a premium in Statesboro. The Panthers got a 1-0 shutout victory before losing 4-1 in the second game.

Game 1: Georgia State 1, Georgia Southern 0

The lone run of the pitchers' duel came in the top of the third inning and stood as the difference in the game.

To start the third, Carrie Williams walked, advanced to second base on a Whitney Phillips sacrifice bunt and scored on a Brenna Morrissey single. The only other Panther hit in the game was an Audrey Mason single in the fourth.

Panther starting pitcher Alana Thomas (2-0) got her second win of the season, allowing only three hits over her 5.0 innings. Kaitlyn Medlam entered the game in the sixth inning and picked up the first Panther save of the season. Medlam allowed only one base runner in her 2.0 innings pitched on a walk.

Georgia Southern's starting pitcher Sarah Purvis lasted the whole game, but suffered the loss despite only surrendering two hits and wracking up nine strikeouts.

Game 2: Georgia State 1, Georgia Southern 4

In almost a mirror image of the first game, the Panthers pushed across a run in the top of the third. Brenna Morrisey walked advanced to third on a Whitney Phillips infield single and scored on a past ball.

Georgia Southern answered in their half of the third, two consecutive singles and a walk loaded the bases. Third baseman Andrea Tarashuck delivered with a bases clearing double. Another single scored Tarashuck to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Starting pitcher McCall Langford (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings. Medlam entered in the third and kept the score there for her 3.2 innings pitched.

Georgia State returns home to host the Panther Invitational on Feb. 18-19. Chattanooga, Eastern Illinois and IUPUI visit the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex for the weekend tournament.
