Morrissey's Home Run Helps Softball Upset Tech

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga.  — Brenna Morrissey's sixth inning home run was the difference in a 2-1 ballgame as Georgia State (12-4) upset No. 25 Georgia Tech (8-8) in Panthersville Wednesday night.

The win by GSU halted a 10-game winning streak by the Yellow Jackets in the series. Georgia State last won a game against the Yellow Jackets on Feb. 9, 2008, which was an 11-3 victory in Panthersville.

The Yellow Jackets broke up a scoreless game with a run on three hits in the top of the fifth inning.

GSU evened the score at one in the bottom of the fifth. Lauren Coleman started the inning off with a double. Pinch runner Ashley Christy advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Jessica Clifton.

Panther starting pitcher McCall Langford retired the side to start the sixth inning and set up a first-pitch, solo homer from Morrissey in the bottom of the inning. That was the second dramatic homer of the week for the junior from Salem, N.H., who had a walk-off blast last Saturday against Central Arkansas.

Langford held Tech to one run despite allowing eight hits in the game and improved to 5-2 on the season. Reliever Kaitlyn Medlam allowed a leadoff walk in the seventh inning before recording three outs to earn her second save of 2012.

Georgia State has now won five consecutive ball games, having won the final four games of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial tournament in Woodstock, Ga.

The Panthers will return to Woodstock this weekend March 2-4 for the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech.
