Panthers Clipped by Owls in 10 Innings, 5-4

Kennesaw, Ga.- Senior Jake Dyer did not allow an earned run in six innings of work but the Georgia State baseball team could not hold onto a three-run lead, falling in 10 innings Saturday to Kennesaw State, 5-4, at Stillwell Stadium.

The Owls' Aaron Dobbs poked a game-winning single through the right side with the bases loaded in the 10th after the teams had been tied, 4-4, since the fifth inning.

The Panthers (7-8) committed five errors in the loss, their fourth one-run game in the last six outings. KSU improved to 7-7 with the victory.

Dyer tossed a career-high 108 pitches on the day, yielding four unearned runs on six hits with one strikeout.

"You can't win baseball games at the Division I level unless you play pretty clean and today we didn't do that," said GSU head coach Greg Frady. "We made costly errors but we fought hard and found a way to take the lead. We manufactured a few runs. I thought we pitched great today but we did not play great defense."

After KSU took an early 1-0 lead, the Panthers pushed the tying run across in the fourth as Drew Shields walked and later scored a groundout.

The Panthers jumped in front an inning later when Kody Adams found the line in left field for a two-out double that scored Joey Wood and Caden Bailey for a 3-1 advantage. Adams later scored on a throwing error into center field by the Owls' catcher to make it 4-1.

The Owls pushed across three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame with the help of two Panther errors. A dropped pop fly and a muffed ground ball extended the inning for a two-run double by Chris McGowan to tie the game, 4-4.

Neither team would score over the next four innings. GSU pitcher Connor Stanley entered with two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth and ended the threat, but GSU had just two hits after the sixth inning as the game went into extras.

Things remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when the Owls loaded the bases against Stanley with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and an infield error. With one out, Panther reliever Travis Lee entered and Dobbs lined one past a diving Brandon Williams at first base for the game-winner.

Adams and Shields finished with two hits apiece to lead GSU on the afternoon.

Tyler Claburn and Hunter Cash also made scoreless relief appearances.

The teams wrap up their series tomorrow with another 2 p.m. start at Stillwell Stadium.
