ATLANTA – Senior Jamiee Freeman posted her second
double-double of the night but it was not enough as the GSU volleyball team
fell to South Alabama 3-2 Saturday night in the finale of the GSU Invitational.
Freeman earned a spot on the All-Tournament team along with
teammate, freshman Natalia Nieto.
With the loss, GSU fell to 2-8 on the year while USA
improved to 5-5. The Panthers finished third in the GSU invitational. Samford took
first place while South Alabama earned second and Mercer finished fourth.
Freeman posted 14 kills to go along with 14 digs in the loss
to record her second double-double of the day and third of the season. Nieto led
GSU with 25 assists while fellow freshman Andrea' DeLeon posted 20. Dede
Bohannon was second in scoring with 11 kills while Sydney Hunsley and Eliza
Zachary posted 10 kills.
Zachary earned five block assists and a solo block against
USA. Sophomore Andrea Ezell rejected two solo blocks and added four block
assists on the night.
GSU fought hard in the first set to take a 1-0 lead.
Bohannon blasted a kill to give GSU a 19-15 lead and the Panther defense held
firm to hold off a late Jaguar run and take the first set 25-23.
In the second set Zachary took a nice feed from DeLeon to
put GSU in a set point situation. USA committed a costly error on the next play
to give GSU a 25-20 set win and a 2-0 lead.
South Alabama rallied to take the third set 25-19 and the
fourth set 25-16.
In the fifth and final set, the Jaguars used an early rally
to take the set 15-9.
GSU will return to action Thursday as the Panthers head
across town to face Clemson in the Georgia Tech Classic at 7 p.m.
