Softball Earns Big Win on Road over Auburn, 4-1

AUBURN, Ala. — Georgia State softball earned a significant road victory 4-1 over the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday night. The last and only other time the Panthers won in Auburn was the 1999 season-opener when GSU earned an 8-0 victory on the Plains.

Georgia State (5-4) took advantage of four Tiger errors to score four runs, only one of which was earned. Both sides had four hits.

Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam (4-2) tossed her second complete game of the season to earn the win. The junior allowed only one run on four hits and struck out six Tiger batters.

Auburn (10-2) got on the board first with a two-out RBI single by DP Emily Carosone in the bottom of the first, but the Panthers promptly tied the game and took an eventual lead.

In the third inning, MeQuilla Franklin reached on a dropped third strike, stole second and then scored when a grounder off the bat of Jessica Clifton was overthrown by the Auburn third baseman.

Franklin stole two bases in the game, keeping the Panthers a perfect 21 for 21 in stolen base attempts on the season.

Georgia State started the fifth inning with three consecutive hits to score three runs and drive Auburn starter Lexi Davis from the game. Taylor Anderson opened the frame with a double and was immediately driven home on a single roped down the third baseline by Brenna Morrissey.

Morrissey and Franklin, who also singled in the inning, both came around to score on a muffed throw by the Auburn first baseman.

Georgia State got out of the third inning on a nifty double play by Clifton in centerfield. Clifton made a nice catch on a sinking line drive and then doubled the Tiger runner off first base with a strong throw.

The Panthers continue play with five games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament in Woodstock, Ga. this weekend on Feb. 22-24.
