Grand Slam Leads Panthers to DH Sweep in Macon

MACON, Ga. — Georgia State (8-7) swept both sides of a doubleheader over Mercer at Sikes Field on Wednesday night to move above .500 for the season.

Mercer is GSU softball's most commonly played opponent. The two teams have now faced off an even 70 times over 28 years with the Panthers leading the all-time series 53-17.

Game 1: GSU 5, Mercer 0

Georgia State scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth and sixth inning to earn a 5-0 victory. The game is only the second shutout for the Panthers so far on the season. The Panthers compiled eleven hits and got multi-hit efforts from four batters: Callie Alford, Taylor Anderson, Audrey Mason and Lauren Coleman.

Starter Katie Worley (3-3) recorded the first complete game shutout of her young career. The freshman did not allow a Mercer hit until the the fourth inning and would only surrender two more during the contest.

Georgia State scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning. After back-to-back walks and a sacrifice bunt to start the frame, Mason had an RBI ground out to the shortstop that scored Alford from third.

The Panthers added two more runs on five singles to their lead in the fifth inning. Coleman and Paige Nowacki both earned RBIs in the inning to score Anderson and Carrie Williams. Anderson's hit in the frame extended the freshman's hitting streak to 12 games, the fifth longest in school history.

In the sixth inning, Mason and Ashley Christy singled to start the frame and were then driven home on consecutive singles by Anderson and MeQuilla Franklin.

GSU had a pair of stolen bases in the game from Christy and Anderson. Christy leads the team with six base swipes in as many tries, while Anderson is tied for second on the squad with four.

Game 2: GSU 9, Mercer 6

A Mason grand slam in the top of the seventh inning helped Georgia State to win an otherwise close ballgame. The Panthers loaded the bases on an error, a walk and a bunt single to start in the inning before the senior outfielder promptly overcame a one-run deficit with one swing.

With two hits in the ballgame, Anderson pushed her hitting streak to 13 games. Christy stole another base to remain a perfect 7-for-7 on the year. Two walks for Coleman gave the first baseman 14 on the season.

Nowacki's home run is her seventh of the season and the 27th of her career. The senior is now only five blasts away from the school record of 32.
