HARRISONBURG, Va. — Despite mounting two seventh inning rallies, Georgia State (36-18, 13-7) lost both sides of a doubleheader at James Madison (38-13, 17-3) in the final CAA series of the 2013 regular season at Veteran's Memorial Stadium on Friday evening.
Lauren Coleman had five walks over the two games to become the first Panther in program history to surpass fifty walks in a single season. Coleman is currently third in the nation in bases on balls.
The losses snap the Panthers' season-long 10-game winning streak, including seven straight wins in conference play.
Game One: James Madison 7, GSU 3
The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, but their rally fell short as the Dukes took the first game of the series by a score of 7 to 3.
Brenna Morrissey grounded into an RBI fielder's choice and both Callie Alford and Lauren Coleman drew bases loaded walks to provide the late-inning scoring for Georgia State. GSU had only one hit in the frame, but took advantage of a pair of JMU errors.
James Madison scored three runs in both the first and fifth innings and a single run in the third on the power of three home runs in the game. The Dukes benefited from three Panther errors in the field.
Katie Worley took the loss for Georgia State after allowing all seven runs to the Dukes. Eron Milton worked the final 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Neither pitcher surrendered a walk.
Game Two: James Madison 5, GSU 4
Down by three runs, Georgia State scored twice in the top of the seventh to finish just one run behind James Madison in the nightcap of the twinbill.
Taylor Anderson doubled and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Clifton. Ashley Christy added a sacrifice fly in the inning to drive home Whitney Phillips from third.
After James Madison scored two runs in the bottom of the first, Georgia State answered with two scores in the top of the second. Coleman led off the inning with a double and came around to score after MeQuilla Franklin reached on a fielding error by the JMU shortstop. Audrey Mason then delivered an RBI single.
The Dukes then scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie and eventually give JMU the victory. Georgia State once again helped Madison's offense with three errors in the game.
Kaitlyn Medlam pitched a complete game in the losing effort for GSU, allowing only two earned runs. Medlam struck out four batters over 6.0 innings of work.
Georgia State looks to avoid the sweep as the two teams conclude the regular season with the final game of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
