Women?s Soccer Dominates Louisiana-Monroe in 2-0 Win

ATLANTA – Ashly Nagy and Alyssia Feronti scored to lead the Georgia State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. GSU improves to 3-6-1 and 1-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. ULM falls to 5-7-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

The Panthers dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Warhawks 18 to eight. GSU started the game fast by forcing ULM goalkeeper Holly Mallinson to make a save on Nagy's attempt in the fifth minute. Mallinson recorded three more saves over the next 20 minutes as the Panthers continued to attack.

Georgia State finally grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 33rdminute when Feronti assisted on Nagy's second goal of the season. Nagy got behind the Warhawk defense and Feronti found her with a long pass. Then, Nagy calmly slotted the ball past Mallinson one-on-one to give GSU the lead.

Neither team threatened again, and the first half ended with the Panthers leading 1-0. Georgia State held the edge in shots (8-3) and both teams took four corner kicks.

GSU started fast again in the second half, with Nagy forcing Mallinson to make her fifth save after less than one of minute of play. ULM went on the attack as it sought an equalizer, but Panther keeper Brie Haynes recorded three easy saves to protect Georgia State's advantage.

The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick in 74th minute after a Louisiana-Monroe defender fouled Georgia State's Jasmine Jakes inside the 18 yard box on a break away. Feronti calmly stepped to the spot and scored past a diving Mallinson with a low shot into the bottom right corner to give GSU a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers dominated the final 16 minutes to secure their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season. Georgia State's Brie Haynes earned her third shutout win and improves to 3-6-1. She finished with five saves on eight shots faced. ULM's Holly Mallinson falls to 4-6-1 after the loss. She recorded 10 saves on 18 shots.

GSU returns to action Friday, Oct. 4, when the Panthers travel to San Marcos, Texas to battle Texas State. The match is set to kickoff at 8 p.m. ET.
