Panthers Fall at Georgia Tech 7-3

ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell at Georgia Tech 7-3 Wednesday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Georgia State (14-16) couldn't overcome a rough start as the Panthers allowed five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam by A.J. Murray that chased starter Tyler McClure (2-4) before he was able to record an out.

From there, GSU pitchers Wayne Wages, Garrett Ford, Hunter Cash and Connor Stanley allowed just two runs, only one earned, on six hits.

Joey Roach delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning for the Panthers, and Matt Rose added an RBI-double, just missing a homer as the ball bounced at the base of the wall.

Rose and leadoff hitter Chad Prain had two hits each for GSU.

"After the five-run inning, it's a 2-2 game all the way to the ninth, and in the ninth, we get the leadoff runner on and we hit him in. We gave up one earned run in eight innings after our starter left the game," GSU head coach Greg Frady said.

"At the end of the day, we have to figure out a way to avoid the multiple-run inning. That's what's killing us. When you play a good team and you give them a multiple-run inning like that, it's very hard to win baseball games.

"We did have an inning where we left the bases loaded," continued Frady, referring to the sixth inning, "and I thought if we could have done something there we could have changed the game."

In the sixth, Georgia State loaded the bases with two outs on a walk by Nic Wilson, a single by Chase Raffield and a walk by Chris Triplett. James Clements hit a slow roller to third base, but the ball bounced right to the third baseman, who was able to keep his foot on the bag as he fielded the ball to retire the runner from second.

Georgia Tech (16-13) starter Ben Parr (2-1) earned his second win against the Panthers with 5.2 scoreless innings. He allowed five hits and four walks while striking out two.

The Panthers travel to Little Rock, Ark., for a Sun Belt Conference weekend series at UALR, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
