STATESBORO, Ga. – After earning a regular-season sweep last season, Georgia State's volleyball team fell to Georgia Southern in the first of two meetings between the rival schools in 2015. The Eagles won 25-22, 25-12, 25-17.

“What a great environment to start the Rivalry Series with Georgia Southern,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “Clearly it's our side of the net; limiting our unforced errors and controlling the tempo of the game.”

Senior Gabby Serafin finished with 11 digs to pass the 1,000-dig mark for her career, becoming just the 10th Panther in school history to do so. Redshirt senior Kitan Ajanaku led the offense with eight kills on .286 hitting.

In Set 1, Georgia State led 5-3 early, but found itself playing from behind for most of the set. After ties at 14 and 19, the Eagles pulled away from the Panthers to win 25-22. Neither team hit well in the first set and combined for 17 attack errors.

Georgia State once again held an early lead in Set 2, but Georgia Southern battled back to take a 9-6 advantage. The Eagles used a 10-1 run in the middle of the frame to build a lead and win 25-12.

Set 3 started just like the previous two, with the Panthers jumping in front. Up 5-2, the Panthers could not hold on and watched as the Eagles went on top 15-11. Georgia State used its final timeout down 20-16, but Georgia Southern would hang on to win 25-17.

GSU returns home for a Sunday match against Little Rock at noon in the Sports Arena.
