ATLANTA – Georgia State's volleyball team struggled Friday to slow down first-place Arkansas State as the Red Wolves swept the Panthers 25-12, 25-14, 25-16. GSU is back at home for one last match Saturday night at 6:30 against rival Georgia Southern.
Georgia State (6-17, 2-11 SBC) looked to be on its way to a win in the third set, up 14-7 and controlling the momentum. However, the Red Wolves (23-1, 14-0 SBC) showed why they've been so difficult to defeat and launched a 12-0 run to go up 19-14. Georgia State was unable to recover and would fall in the third in final set.
“[Arkansas State] did a great job controlling the tempo of this match,” head coach Sally Polhamus said. “They made it difficult for us to score on them and get into our rhythm.”
Georgia State was led on offense by senior Deidra Bohannon who finished with eight kills and 15 digs. Senior Gabby Serafin added 14 digs as well. Kristina Stinson, Kitan Ajanaku and Brianna Jones each tallied four kills. Arkansas State out-blocked Georgia State 8.0-0.0 and won the hitting battle .336-.045.
The Panthers host rival Georgia Southern Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena with a lot on the line. GSU is fighting for a spot at the conference tournament. Only the top eight teams qualify for the tournament and GSU currently sits in 10th with the Eagles perched in the eighth and final spot. It is also Senior Day for Georgia State as five seniors will be recognized and honored prior to the match.
