AUBURN, Ala. – On Day 2 of the Tiger Invitational, the Georgia State softball team picked up come-from-behind victories over Winthrop and Ball State at Jane B. Moore Field on Friday, Feb. 13 to improve to 2-1 in 2015.
“After a tough loss Thursday, I was really proud of the way that the team bounced back today," head coach Roger Kincaid said. "They fought hard and found a way to win two games despite falling behind early in both.”
Game 1 (8-7)
Megan Litumbe led the way with two home runs and five RBI while Chelsea Stanfield picked up her first win at GSU in relief. Winthrop jumped in front 3-0 after one and GSU would not get on the board until the top of the fourth when Litumbe launched her first homer of the season to cut the Eagles' lead to 3-2.
Georgia State then plated four in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Ivie Drake drove in two with a double and Litumbe hit her second bomb of the game to extend the Panthers' advantage to 6-3. The Eagles responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-6 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Alford tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Litumbe hit a RBI single to give GSU an 8-7 lead it would not relinquish.
Game 2 (10-4)
Taylor Anderson went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored in Game 2 while Stanfield picked up the complete game victory for her second win of the day. The Panthers fell behind 1-0 early but responded with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Anderson, Morgan Brown and Lauren Coleman loaded the bases before Callie Alford singled to score two. Then with the bases loaded for the second time, Litumbe hit a sacrifice fly to plate Coleman and put GSU up 3-1 after one.
Ball State scored one in the second before Anderson launched a two run homer to put the Panthers up by three, 5-2. No one scored in the third and both teams plated one in the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Drake singled to score Ashley Christy and Kensey Caldwell doubled to plate Drake.
Georgia State scored two more on a pair of throwing errors in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Ball State scored one in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as GSU secured the 10-4 victory. Stanfield went the distance to improve to 2-1 on the season.
