Seven-Run Fifth Leads GSU Past Georgia Tech

What you need to know:

* Georgia State scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 7-6 victory over Georgia Tech.

* The Panthers improve to 22-7 overall and 9-0 at home this season.

* GSU now turns its attention to Thursday's home game against Kennesaw State at 5 p.m.


ATLANTA – Thanks to seven runs scored in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Georgia State softball team came from behind and held on to defeat Georgia Tech 7-6 Tuesday night at Bob Heck Field.

Lauren Coleman led the way with three RBI while Megan Litumbe drove in two. Taylor Anderson and Ashley Christy also recorded one RBI as seven different Panthers scored in the game. Katie Worley pitched 6.2 innings en route to her seventh victory and Taylor Thorpe closed the game for her second save.

The game opened with four scoreless frames before Georgia Tech grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth on Katie Johnsky's two-RBI double off the wall. Georgia State responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-2 after five complete.

Mandy Blackwell started the inning with a one-out double. Morgan Brown then singled and stole second before Anderson drove in a run with a single through the right side. After Anderson stole second, Christy singled to drive in Brown and tie the game 2-2.

Litumbe then singled past the third baseman to drive in two to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead. After Ivie Drake drew a walk, Coleman blasted a three-run bomb over the scoreboard in center to put GSU up 7-2. After a scoreless sixth, the Yellow Jackets scored four in the top of the seventh on two homers and a triple before Thorpe recorded the final out in relief to secure the 7-6 win.

The Panthers are now 22-7 overall and 9-0 at the Robert E. Heck Softball Complex this season. Georgia State continues its home stand on Thursday, March 26 at 5 p.m. against in-state rival Kennesaw State.
