MACON, Ga. – The Georgia State softball team swept Mercer in dramatic fashion on the road at Sikes Field Wednesday night. Taylor Thorpe pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 1 before picking up the win in Game 2 in relief.

“I challenged the team to win two games tonight where in the past we may have settled for split,” head coach Roger Kincaid said. “I knew that if they performed the way they were capable of we would come out on top. We put together an excellent performance in Game 1 and we showed so much heart to come from behind in Game 2. I am so proud of this team.”

The sophomore improves to 7-0 and is tied for second in the conference standings in the category. Megan Litumbe launched two home runs while Callie Alford added one to her team leading total of seven. Ashley Christy hit a game-winning, two-RBI double in Game 2 to cap a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI and a run scored.

Overall the 13-2 Panthers have won 10 straight, and they carry this momentum into the conference opener against Troy on Saturday, March 7.

Game 1

Thorpe earned her first complete-game shutout victory of the season in a 3-0 win over Mercer. Thorpe has now pitched complete games in each of her last three starts.

The Panthers were led by Mandy Blackwell who was 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI in her first start of the season. Lauren Coleman finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Litumbe launched her fifth home run of the season.

After a scoreless first, GSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Blackwell's RBI double to right center. The next three innings were scoreless for both teams as Thorpe scattered three hits.

In the top of the sixth, Georgia State doubled its lead to 2-0 when Litumbe blasted a solo home run to deep to left. Thorpe retired the Mercer side in order to keep GSU ahead 2-0 after six complete.

In the top of the seventh, Christy hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a ground out. She then scored on Morgan Brown's suicide squeeze bunt put the Panthers up 3-0. Thorpe then slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of seventh to secure the win.

Game 2

Mercer scored two in the bottom of the first frame on three walks, a hit by pitch and single to take a 2-0 lead. The Bears could have done more damage, but they left the bases loaded when Worley forced a pop-up to end the threat.

In the top of the second, Georgia State got two runs back to tie the game 2-2. Drake led off the inning with a single, and then Litumbe launched her second homer of the day and sixth of the season to tie the score.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the GSU half of the third, Mercer took a 3-2lead on a bloop RBI single to center. The Panthers tied the score 3-3 on Ashley Christy's RBI double in the fifth. Mercer responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead, 4-3.

In the sixth, Callie Alford launched her team leading seventh home run to tie the score 4-4. However, the tie was short lived as the Bears again scored a single run in the bottom half to reclaim a 5-4 advantage after six complete.

GSU completed the comeback in the top of the seventh when the Panthers pushed four across to take an 8-5 lead. Taylor Bradley and Morgan Brown started the rally with back-to-back infield singles. Taylor Anderson's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, and then Christy's double drove both in. Lauren Coleman then singled to plate Christy. Cassidy Faulk subbed to run for Coleman and she scored on Alford's double.

In the bottom of the final frame, Thorpe retired the side in order to clinch the win in relief.
