What Happens When The Ball Won't Go In the Basket?

LITTLE ROCK, ARK. – Georgia State ran into one of the Sun Belt's best defensive teams and fell victim to a 59-32 drubbing Saturday.

The visitors from Atlanta struggled mightily in finding the basket, shooting just 12-of-46 (29%) from the field and 8-of-17 standing still at the free throw line (47.1%). Add in 18 turnovers and the results were alarming.

When Little Rock held GSU (8-11, 3-7) to four points in the first quarter and five in the second to take a 27-9 halftime lead, the record books came out to find the lowest score in GSU history. That proved to be a 62-21 loss at Alabama in 1990. With 13 points in the third quarter, GSU's 22 by that point kept that record intact.

Little Rock (6-4 in the Sun Belt) came in after a 69-36 win over Georgia Southern on Thursday and kept that level of defense up today.

This game never was actually a competitive game. Little Rock promptly built a 13-0 lead as Georgia State waited until 1:38 to finally score and it was 13-4 at the end of the first quarter. GSU went its first 12 possessions of the game with 0-for-6 shooting and 6 turnovers. The second quarter was a repeat as GSU maintained its futility against Little Rock's defense. At halftime, the Trojans were up by 18 points at 27-9 as the Panthers shot 3 of 18 from the field (16.7%) and 3-of-9 from the line (33%).

The third quarter was more competitive (17-13 Little Rock) as the lead grew to 44-22 after three quarters.

Georgia State, without five players and three starters, had still won with this line-up at Appalachian State last week. Today, point guard Madison Newby had nine points, but it was 2-of-9 shooting and 5-of-8 free throws to get that. Ashlee Cole made four of her 11 shots for eight points. Haley Gerrin had six rebounds to lead that category.

GSU was among the conference leaders in rebounds (39.7) while Little Rock was last at 33.4 per game, but one wouldn't know that today as the host Trojans dominated 45-28 with 16 offensive rebounds.

Little Rock got 17 points and nine boards from Shanity James, with 10 points and 12 rebounds from Kaitlyn Pratt. Sharde Collins added 12 more points as Little Rock shot 40.4% for the game.

Georgia State returns to Atlanta for a pair of games next week with Texas State on Thursday and UT Arlington on Saturday in Lettermen's Day.
