AUBURN, Ala. – Behind 13 hits, Georgia State (11-8) took down Bryant (0-8) Saturday night at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Ala. GSU is now 1-1 at the Wilson/Demarini Classic and will face No. 3/4 Auburn Sunday at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
Georgia State took a 1-0 lead in the first frame as Kensey Caldwell knocked a high-bouncer to the shortstop that scored Brenna Skalski from third base. After falling behind 2-1, GSU struck for three runs in the top of the second. Skalski drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and Caldwell delivered a two-RBI single to put GSU back in front.
Bryant pulled even in the bottom of the second with two more runs of their own, but GSU erupted for a six-spot in the top of the fifth to go up 10-4, thanks to a pair of costly Bryant errors. Ivie Drake singled home a run in the frame to extend her hitting streak to a team-high 10 games.
Drake struck again in the next inning with an RBI-double to the wall that scored Taylor Bradley from second. Bradley had reached on a two-RBI double on the previous pitch. GSU would add an insurance run in the seventh inning after the Bulldogs scored three in the bottom of the sixth.
Caldwell and Morgan Brown each went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Bradley, Reagan Morgan and Taylor Anderson each scored three times for the Panthers. Anderson is now just one run shy of tying the school record of 159 career runs scored. Skalski recorded three stolen bases on the day, just one short of the GSU single-game record.
Georgia State will play on the SEC Network Sunday against No. 3/4 Auburn at 1 p.m. Game 2 of the doubleheader, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., will be shown on SEC+.
