MONROE, LA. -- Joey Roach his his 10th home run of the season to give Georgia State an early lead, but ULM rallied for a 5-3 victory Sunday at Warhawk Field to win the series, two games to one.
Roach had three hits on the day, including a leadoff single in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate. With two outs, freshman Darius Sewell hit a long fly ball, but the left fielder made the catch just in front of the fence for the final out.
Roach's round-tripper gave GSU a 3-2 advantage in the third inning. With GSU trailing 2-0, Jaylen Woullard led off by legging out an infield single, Justin Jones drew a walk, and then Roach hit the 1-1 pitch over the right field fence for his 24th career homer.
but ULM moved regained the lead with three runs in the fourth. The Warhawks loaded the bases with one-out on two hit batters and a walk and then tied the game on a squeeze bunt that went for a base hit. Then Brian Barefoot bounced a single through the middle to score two runs for a 5-3 lead.
Neither starter figured in the decision. ULM reliever Chris Hunt (3-3) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Anthony Herrera record the final six outs for his fifth save. Reliever Bryce Conley (5-3) took the loss for the Panthers.
Both teams left 12 men on base. The Panthers had runners at second and third with two outs in the fifth and sixth and then runners at first and second with two outs in eighth but couldn't get a key hit.
GSU begins a 10-game homestand by hosting Georgia Tech Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
