ATLANTA -- James Clements' first homer of the season gave Georgia State a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning, but Appalachian State scored four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to win 6-5 and even the series.
The deciding game is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Clements, a senior who has five hits in the series, broke a 2-2 in the sixth inning as he hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer, just the second of his career, to put the Panthers (17-21, 6-11 Sun Belt) ahead 4-2.
But Appalachian State (11-28, 6-14) answered with two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Grayson Atwood.
With the score still tied at 4-4, App State put two on in the ninth on a walk and a hit by pitch, and with one out, Matt Vernon doubled inside the bag at third to bring home the go-ahead run. The Mountaineers added another run on a wild pitch to take a 6-4 lead.
The Panthers tried to mount a ninth inning rally. Will Kilgore led off with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Jaylen Woullard's single up the middle to bring GSU within 6-5.
After Woullard was thrown out trying to advance on a ball that got away from the catcher, Justin Jones reached on a two-out error, bringing Joey Roach to the plate. Roach hit a sharp line drive that the first baseman was able to knock down and make the play at first for the final out.
Georgia State starter Marc-Andre Habeck turned in a quality start, allowing just two runs, both unearned, on two hits with five strikeouts but did not figure in the decision. Reliever Clayton Payne (1-1) took the loss.
App State reliever Reed Howell (4-1) earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings, and Brian Bauk pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
