Kennesaw, Ga. -- Georgia State fell 3-2 at Kennesaw State Tuesday night at Stillwell Stadium as the Owls pushed across the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning.
The two Atlanta-area schools split their annual season series after Georgia State's 4-3 win at Panthersville two weeks ago, but the loss snapped Georgia State's (23-26) three-game winning streak in the series.
Junior catcher Brandon Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his second of the season, to tie the game at 2-2.
The score remained that way until the seventh inning, when Alex Liquori led off for KSU (23-24) with a triple to center field. With the infield in, the Panthers got the first out on a soft ground ball to second base. The next batter, Jeremy Howell, hit another grounder to second base, but this one took a sharp hop, allowing Liquori to come home just ahead of the throw from Will Kilgore.
Gonzalez, playing for the injured Joey Roach, also had an opposite field double in the game for two of the Panthers' eight hits.
Freshman Darius Sewell doubled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
The GSU pitching staff held the Owls to six hits and just two earned runs, but the Panthers struggled to score as they play without three injured starters all hitting over .300 in Roach, left fielder Jaylen Woullard and designated hitter James Clements.
Georgia State plays its final home series this weekend, hosting Troy Friday through Sunday. Saturday's 2 p.m. game will be Senior Day.
