GSU Drops Sun Belt Opener, Falls in Straight Sets

What you need to know:

In the first match of the weekend, Georgia State dropped its match against UL Lafayette in straight sets. The Ragin' Cajuns defeated the Panthers with final scores of 22-25, 16-25 and 11-25.

* Seniors Kristina Stinson and Eliza Zachary proved bright spots for the Panthers as they combined for 13 kills, but GSU fell to 4-8 on the season.

* The Panthers will look to bounce back and inch closer to .500 against UL Monroe tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

LAFAYETTE, L.A.  In the first match of the weekend, Georgia State lost to UL Lafayette inside Earl Long Gymnasium. The Ragin' Cajuns improved to 4-11 on the season and won in straight sets of 22-25, 16-25 and 11-24.

Georgia State fell to 4-8 on the 2016 season and was unable to overcome UL Lafayette's offensive firepower. The Ragin' Cajuns came out ready to play with outside hitters Katherine Young and Chloe Cordell leading the charge for the victory.

The Panthers used solid offensive performances from Eliza Zachary, Kristina Stinson and Crystal Lee to make it difficult for ULL early on in the match. With her eight kills, Zachary improved to 83 kills on the season.

Zachary, Stinson and Lee combined for 17 kills on the evening and Sarah Renner added 21 assists. Katelyn Rawls and Shae Chapman also contributed to the offense with two kills apiece.

Anna Rantala set the tone defensively with 10 digs, while Stinson and Celeste Friesen combined for 11 digs of their own.

The Ragin' Cajuns made life difficult for GSU all match long. Sydney Davis and Stacey Reilly set the pace of play with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Jessica Bartczyszyn had a match-high 24 assists and set up Young and Cordell nicely on the offensive end.

After a disappointing performance, head coach Sally Polhamus and the Panthers will look to learn from the defeat and move on in preparation for tomorrow night's match at UL Monroe. First serve between the Panthers and Warhawks is set for 7:30 p.m.
