ATLANTA – In its last home match of the season, Georgia State women's soccer dominated Coastal Carolina 4-0 for its fourth consecutive win Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex. It was the first time since 2003 GSU has won four straight conference matches.
The Panthers improved to 6-9-1 overall and 4-4 in the Sun Belt while Coastal Carolina dropped to 7-6-1 on the year and 6-2 in the conference. Not only did the Panthers win four in a row for the first time since 2015, but they also snapped the Chanticleers' streak of three straight shutout victories.
“It was a tough weekend having to travel to App State on Friday, get back late in the morning then play again on Sunday,” GSU head coach Ed Joyce said. “But the girls responded well, worked really hard and executed the game plan as we planned it. Then we were obviously very excited to see Moe have a great game in our last home game.”
GSU found the back of the net in just the second minute of Sunday's contest, as Caitlin Ray tapped a pass inside the six-yard box to Brisa Zavala who netted her first career goal as a Panther. Georgia State continued to attack and added to its lead in the 24th minute when senior Monique Hundley kicked a high chip that curved into the top-right corner of the net to give GSU a 2-0 advantage.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the first period, Georgia State struck again to take a commanding 3-0 halftime lead. Brooke Shank fired a nice lead-pass to Rebecca Crouch who sunk her first goal of the season. The Panthers held a 12-7 advantage in total shots and a 5-0 lead in shots on target at the break.
GSU carried its momentum into the second half, building its lead to 4-0 in the 48th minute after Lily Barron hit Hundley with a through-ball that Hundley converted for her second goal of the match. Hundley set single-match career-highs in total shots with seven and goals with two in Sunday's win.
Georgia State senior keeper Madi Card earned her fifth win of the season in goal and notched back-to-back shutouts. It was the second match in a row she faced 14 total shots from the opponent and finished with a clean sheet.
