ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell to South Alabama 12-4 Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex, evening their Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Panthers (12-11, 1-3 Sun Belt) rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, but South Alabama (13-10, 3-2 Sun Belt) answered with eight runs in the next two innings.
The Jaguars jumped in front on Wells Davis' three-run homer in the first inning off GSU starter Jake Rogers (3-2). GSU got one back in the second on a sacrifice fly by Romero Greer and then took the lead in the third. Justin Jones singled, Nick Gatewood doubled and Brandon Bell singled through the hole at short to plate one run. After Jack Thompson walked to load the bases, Gatewood scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Jake Corso to tie the game. Then Will Kilgore put the Panthers ahead 4-3 with a sacrifice fly.
But South Alabama immediately regained the lead with five runs in the fourth inning and then added three more in the fifth. Davis finished with four RBI for the Jaguars, while Brendan Donovan had three RBI and Michael Sandle added two.
USA starter Tyler Carr (3-2) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits to earn the victory.
Bell and Leonard had two runs each for the Panthers.
The Panthers turned two double plays in the game to raise their NCAA-leading total to 31 on the season, and Gatewood, the junior catcher, picked off a runner at second base.
