Panthers Drop Series Finale at Troy 8-3

Troy, Ala. -- Georgia State fell at Troy 8-3 Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field as the Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference series, two games to one.

The Panthers (13-14, 2-6 Sun Belt) trailed just 4-2 in the eighth inning when Troy (19-9, 5-4 Sun Belt) scored four runs to pull away.

Georgia State's senior shortstop Justin Jones had two hits today, including the 200th hit of his career. He also tied the Georgia State career record for fielding assists with his 524th. His next assist will break the record that he currently shares with Michael Brand.

After Troy scored first on a solo homer in the first inning, the Panthers answered immediately. Will Kilgore led off the second with a double down the left field line, and then Romero Greer, who had two hits on the day, drove him home with a single to right center.

The Trojans moved ahead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

GSU got one back in the seventh on an RBI-single by Brandon Bell to pull within 4-2 before Troy scored four in the eighth, including a two-run homer by Manning Early.

Bell, the Panther right fielder, had two hits in the game and threw out a runner at the plate to end the sixth inning.

The Panthers collected 10 hits on the day but only one for extra bases, and GSU left 10 men on base.

Starter Jake Rogers (3-3) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Troy starter Daren Osby (4-0) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out seven in seven innings of work.

Georgia State returns to action with a midweek game at Furman on Wednesday at 5 p.m., and then the Panthers host Arkansas State next weekend in Sun Belt play.
