KENNESAW, GA. -- In a game that featured 28 hits and 22 runs, Georgia State fell 12-10 at Kennesaw State Monday at Stillwell Stadium as the teams split their annual home-and-home series.
Brandon Bell drove in four runs for the Panthers (12-29), while Griffin Cheney reached base six straight times, including three hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Georgia State outhit the Owls (19-23) 15-13.
After the Panthers tied the game with two runs in the third inning on an RBI-triple by Dalton Davies and a sacrifice fly by Bell, Kennesaw State took the lead for good with a run in the bottom half and then broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead.
Still trailing 9-3 after five, the Panthers made things interesting with four runs in the sixth inning. With runners at first and second, Cheney's ground ball was misplayed by the third baseman, and as the ball bounced into left field, Ryan Glass scored from second base and Jackson Sisk scored all the way from first. With two outs, Bell singled up the middle for his third RBI of the day, and Rhett Harper's bases-loaded walk pulled the Panthers within 9-6.
Kennesaw State answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-6 advantage, but GSU continued to chip away. Bell had another RBI-single in the seventh, and then Cheney delivered a two-run single in the eighth to make it 12-10.
In his six trips to the plate, Cheney walked, singled, doubled, reached on an error, walked and singled. The sophomore shortstop also started three double plays.
Luke Leonard and Elian Merejo added two hits each for Georgia State.
Georgia State will play its fifth road game in the last six days Wednesday at Furman at 6 p.m., and then the Panthers will return home to host Coastal Carolina this weekend.
