Panthers Overcome 14-Point Second Half Deficit, Tops Georgia Southern 82-77

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia State trailed in-state rival Georgia Southern by 14 points with under 13 minutes to play but came together for a remarkable comeback and topped the Eagles 82-77 at Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday night.

Georgia State (14-7, 7-3 Sun Belt) broke a second-place tie with Georgia Southern (12-9, 6-4 Sun Belt) as the league reached the midpoint of conference play. The Panthers won for the second-straight year in Statesboro after going winless for 23 years and have now won six of seven over the Eagles.

Five Panthers finished in double figures led by junior Kane Williams who scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Redshirt-junior Justin Roberts and senior Damon Wilson each finished with 13 points, while redshirt-junior Corey Allen and sophomore Nelson Phillips finished with 10 points a piece. Phillips just missed a double-double pulling down eight rebounds.

Ike Smith led Georgia Southern with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Crawley finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Neither team shot better than 40.0 percent from the floor, but the Eagles were held to just 24 made field goals and missed 11 free throws including nine in the second half.

"This game was definitely an illustration of resilience on our part," head coach Rob Lanier said. "I just told our guys that this team will never be together again, and we need to make the most of our time together. After 28 minutes, I could see our guys wake up and start to understand what we have been telling them about our defense. The stuff we did was exactly what we have been talking about. It worked and led us back to a great win."

Georgia Southern scored the first five points of the second half to take their first double digit lead and pushed the margin to as many as 14, 65-51, with 12:55 remaining in the game before the Panthers started to mount a comeback.

A 6-0 Georgia State run cut Georgia Southern's lead to 65-57 with 11:40 to play before a Kavonte Ivery lay-up cut the margin to five with 7:50 remaining. Ivery came off the bench to score eight points and grabbed three rebounds.

Minutes later a 3-pointer by Phillips cut the Eagles' lead to 71-67 with 6:39 to play. Two possessions later Wilson went to the hoop and the Eagles led by just two.
Following a pair of free throws from Williams and 1-of-2 from the line by Phillips, Georgia State took its first lead of the second half 72-71 with 4:19 to play.

After the Eagles retook the lead, junior Josh Linder's putback with 52 seconds remaining gave the Panthers a 77-76 lead. It was part of a 6-0 run that continued when Williams knocked down two more free throws with 24.5 seconds to play putting Georgia State ahead 80-76.

Georgia Southern took an early 18-13 lead just over eight minutes into the game as Smith scored 12 of the Eagles' first 18 points.

After the Panthers tied the game at 18, the Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to take a 24-18 lead with 7:32 to go in the opening half.

A 3-pointer by Wilson, the Panthers fourth of the half tied the game 35-35 with just over three minutes to play, before Georgia Southern used an 8-1 run to take its biggest lead of the half, 43-36, with 1:12 remaining.

Georgia Southern went into the locker room with a 45-40 lead after shooting 47.1 percent before the break while holding the Panthers to just 37.5 percent shooting from the floor and 4-of-14 from 3-point range.
