Panthers Defeated in Statesboro

Lewis scores 16 in return from injury.

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia State's seven-game win streak against rival Georgia Southern was snapped Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse as the Eagles defeated the short-handed Panthers 81-56.
 
With only nine active players including five freshmen, Georgia State led out of the gates, but the Eagles used a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter to take the lead. Georgia Southern led by as much as 10 in the second quarter before Georgia State closed the first half on an 11-3 run to cut GS's lead to 32-30 at the break.
 
Georgia Southern went on a 19-2 run midway through the third quarter to take control of the contest.
 
For the game, Georgia State shot 41% while Georgia Southern shot 50%. The Eagles knocked down 10 3-pointers compared to the Panthers' 2.
 
After missing the last two game due to injury, Jada Lewis led Georgia State with 16 points, six rebounds and three steals. Freshman Joelle Johnson totaled nine points and four rebounds and senior Shaq Miller-McCray continued to defend the paint with three blocks and six rebounds.
 
Freshman Kennedy Powell finished with eight points and provided a spark on defense with a pair of blocks and a steal.
 
Georgia State is on the road again next week at Appalachian State on Thursday and Coastal Carolina on Saturday.
