FOLEY, Ala. - After falling to Little Rock in the first game of pool play yesterday, the Panthers regained footing outlasting Louisiana 3-2 (10-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 15-10) in the final match of the season.
Georgia State's five seniors shined in the contest. Jordan Shoemaker dished out 50 assists for the third time this season. Many of Shoemaker's assists went to longtime teammate and fellow Santa Fe College transfer, Leah Wilcox, who brought down 17 kills including the game-winning shot. Meisheia Griffin added 12 kills in route to being named the Under Armour Player of the Match. Additionally Cierra Sillmon contributed seven kills, while Dzemila Hadzic delivered a crucial service ace in the fifth set.
In an unique match that saw fluctuations in play from both squads, Louisiana stormed to a 25-10 victory in the first set. The Ragin' Cajuns dominated the net with five blocks to jostle the GSU offense.
The Panthers quickly found a response and jumped to a large lead of their own in the second. Freshman Erin Wyatt, who matched a career high 19 kills during the contest, began to find her rhythm. The Texas native maneuvered the Louisiana block and placed four balls deep in Ragin'
Cajuns territory to propel the GSU offense. A kill by Wilcox secured the 25-19 second frame victory to tie the match.
The third-set mirrored the first, as Louisiana found success early and maintained their lead throughout the frame. Eventually, the Ragin'
Cajuns would cruise to a 25-17 victory to take the one-point edge.
Not wanting to end the season quite yet, the Panthers remained resilient. Improved passing from the back row allowed Shoemaker to connect with various hitters, igniting the GSU offense. Five different Panthers would accumulate kills in route to tying the match yet again with a 25-20 fourth set victory.
Throughout the match whichever squad came out to a quick lead in each set went on to control and command the set, as there were very minimal lead changes on the day. In the race to fifteen it was Georgia State who jumped to the early lead. This time Louisiana found a way to knot the match at seven, but GSU would be able to capitalize on errors from the Ragin'
Cajuns offensive core to regain the edge. Wilcox, the Georgia State leader in kills, clinched the set and match victory with a kill down the line.
"It means the world to me that I was able to be a part of a team that has the confidence in me to put down that ball on a game winning point," said Wilcox. "The support and unity is what I loved most about being on this team. Also, to have Jordan [Shoemaker] deliver that set to me, after being together so long, was something so special and meant to be."
