Men's Basketball

Downtown Takes Down Midtown - State Tops Tech 123-120 in 4OT Thriller

First Win Over an ACC Opponent

Box Score ATLANTA-Opening night of the 2020-21 NCAA Basketball season might have gotten its 'Game of the Year' out of the way early as Georgia State survived a four-overtime thriller to top in-town foe Georgia Tech 123-120 on Wednesday night/Thursday morning at McCamish Pavilion.

Records flowed for both teams, but it was Georgia State (1-0) that won its regular season opener for a eighth-straight year, defeated an ACC opponent for the first time in school history, and snapped a 14-game losing streak to Georgia Tech (0-1).

For the first time in school history four Panthers finished with 20 or more points led by Justin Roberts career-high 26 points and nine rebounds. Senior Kane Williams recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Corey Allen chipped in 22 points and nine rebounds in a school-record 50 minutes of action.

Redshirt-junior Eliel Nsoseme, making his Georgia State debut, finished with 22 points and seven rebounds going 10-of-13 from the floor. The 22 points were the first time a Panther has scored 20 or more points in his debut since Ryan Harrow finished with 20 to open the 2013-14 season against Southern Poly.

Moses Wright led Georgia Tech with double-double of 31 points and 20 rebounds, while Jose Alvarado added a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds playing 58 minutes. Michael Devoe also added a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Collin Moore scored 12 points for the Panthers in his collegiate debut as Georgia State shot 48.4 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 3-pointers.

Game Highlights
  • Trailing 13-5 with 14:49 to go in the first half, Georgia State went on a 17-0 run, capped by a Moore lay-up to lead 26-15 with 8:06 to play.
  • Georgia State led the rest of the first half and most of the second half. Tech used a 7-0 run to tie the game 59-59 with 9:28 to play in regulation.
  • Tech took its first lead of the second half on a pair of free throws by Wright, going ahead 72-70 with 4:34 to play.
  • Roberts clutch 3-pointer with 1:58 to play in regulation tied the game at 77-77, as both teams went scoreless the rest of the way. A Devoe jumper with four seconds to play was off the mark.
  • Neither team led by more than two in the first overtime, though the Panthers had a chance at the end, but a Williams lay-up was just off the mark.
  • Georgia State took a four-point lead with 1:05 to play in the second overtime following two Roberts' free throws, but Tech scored four-straight points to send it to triple-overtime.
  • Georgia Tech built a four-point lead with 21 seconds to play in triple overtime before Roberts knocked down a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play (109-108). After Alvarado made one of two free throws, Moore was fouled with 1.3 seconds to play and the freshman calmly made both free throws to send it to a fourth overtime.
  • Tech took a 116-114 lead with two minutes to play in the fourth overtime, but with turnovers on back-to-back possessions, the Panthers scored five-straight to go ahead 119-116 with 39 seconds to play.
  • Tech cut the deficit to just one twice in the final 16 seconds but could get no closer.
