Panthers Come Up Short in Semifinals

FOLEY, Ala. -- #2 Georgia State fell 1-0 to #1 Arkansas State Friday night in the semifinals of the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Championships.

The Red Wolves grabbed the lead with a goal in the 33rd minute and survived GSU's push in the second half to advance to the Championship game.

After earning just one shot in the first half, Georgia State fired six shots in the second half and earned four corner kicks. In the end, Arkansas State's keeper made a handful of impressive saves to prevent an equalizer.

The loss ends an historic fall for the Panthers. GSU went 9-2-2 in the regular season, the third best win percentage in program history, and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the third year in a row.

"I told the team that this should hurt, this should be disappointing, but we need to reflect on the positives as well," head coach Ed Joyce said. "They also should be proud of everything they accomplished. We won 10 games without even playing a full non-conference schedule. They should be proud of that. We're a team of players going towards a common goal, but unfortunately we fell a little short but we've built a massive foundation for where this program is going moving forward. "
