Toppin Perfect as Men's Basketball Tops Charlotte 76-65

Box Score CHARLOTTE-Redshirt-sophomore JoJo Toppin was perfect from the floor and the free throw line and Georgia State got hot in the second half to top Charlotte 76-65 on Friday evening at Halton Arena.

Georgia State (3-1) knocked down 11 3-pointers and used a pair of 8-0 runs in the second half to top Charlotte (0-2) for a second-straight year.
Toppin finished with a career-high 16 points going 5-of-5 from the floor, 6-of-6 from the free throw line, while adding career-highs with five rebounds and four assists.

Senior Kane Williams finished with a team-high 21 points, scoring the 1,000th point of his career just over a minute into the game. Williams became the 23rd Panther to reach the milestone as he opened the game scoring the first seven Panther points.

Senior Corey Allen knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Boyce chipped in seven points. Redshirt-junior Eliel Nsoseme pulled down 12 rebounds and to go along with five points and four assists.

Charlotte was led by Jahmir Young who scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Jordan Shepard added 15 points, but went just 3-of-14 from the floor.

On a 3-pointer by freshman Evan Johnson, the Panthers took a 26-25 lead with 4:17 to play in the first half, but the 49ers responded with a 7-0 run and took a 32-26 lead with 2:27 to play. It marked the biggest lead for either team before the break.

Despite shooting just 37.0 percent before the break, the Panthers went into the locker room trailing just 36-32 while Charlotte shot 50.0 percent from the floor.
After Charlotte scored the opening basket of the second half, Georgia State responded with an 8-0 run to take a 40-38 lead with 16:56 to play.

Trailing by two, Toppin used a personal 6-0 run capped by an emphatic dunk to give the Panthers a 46-42 lead with just under 13 minutes to play.

Charlotte used a 7-0 run midway through the second half to build a 52-48 lead with 8:25 to play, before the Panthers finally started to heat up.

Georgia State knocked down 3-pointers on three-straight possessions including two by Allen and one by Williams before taking a 61-59 lead with just over five minutes to play.

Holding Charlotte scoreless for more than three minutes, the Panthers used an 8-0 run to push the lead to 68-59 with under three minutes to play.

Charlotte would get no closer than seven points in the final 3:25 as the Panthers knocked down their free throws finishing the game 17-of-24 from the free throw line.

Game Highlights
• Georgia State topped Charlotte for the second-straight year in the 30th meeting between the two former Sun Belt Conference foes.
• Georgia State has started the season 3-1 for the third time in four years.
• Williams moved ahead of Chris Collier and into 22nd place on Georgia State's all-time scoring list with 1,015 points. He is now just two points behind Travis Williams for 21st.
• Since returning to the Sun Belt in 2013-14, Georgia State has finished in the top two of the final regular season conference standings five times in seven seasons.
• During that same time, GSU has won more games (156) than any other NCAA Division I team in Georgia.
• The Panthers outrebounded Charlotte 40-34 and turned the ball over just eight times on the night.
 
Georgia State will have some time off for final exams before returning to the court on Dec. 16, at 6 p.m., hosting Mercer.
