Hart Scores in Overtime to Lead GSU to 2-1 Win

Freshman Brooke Hart scored in the 93rd minute to lead GSU to a 2-1 OT win at Mercer.

MACON, Ga. -- Freshman Brooke Hart scored her first collegiate goal in style, giving Georgia State a 2-1 victory in overtime at Mercer to open the 2020 season.

Hart, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., settled the ball off a GSU corner kick and snuck her shot past the Mercer keeper just three minutes into overtime. Hart's winner came after Mercer evened the score with a goal in the 70th minute.

The Panthers took the lead in the 14th minute off a long blast from senior Liz Anne Fogarty found the back of the net just above the keeper's reach. It was Fogarty's fourth career goal.
 

"The girls worked really hard for each other today," head coach Ed Joyce said. "They showed a lot of character in dealing with a lightning delay and started the game well. Liz scored a great goal and we couldn't be happier for Brooke to get a goal in her first college game. It was a really good game and we are thankful to Mercer for hosting it."

Just 35 minutes prior to kickoff, lightning in the area delayed warm-ups and caused the start time to be pushed from 7 p.m. to 7:45. The Panthers were still able to start fast, finish strong and beat the Bears in Macon for the first time since 2006.

Maria Subies made the start in goal for the Panthers and recorded five saves. Mercer out-shot Georgia State 15-13 but both sides had six shots on goal.

GSU hosts the Bears for a rematch at the GSU Soccer Complex on Oct. 15.

Next up for the 1-0 Panthers is a quick turnaround to visit Chattanooga Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. UPDATE: Sunday's match at Chattanooga is canceled. GSU will visit Appalachian State on Thursday.
