Allen Scores 22, Panthers Top Coastal Carolina 70-62

CONWAY, S.C.-Senior Corey Allen scored 22 points and Georgia State topped Coastal Carolina 70-62 on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.

A night after Coastal Carolina (7-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) won the conference opener, Georgia State (7-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) used quick starts to both the first half and second half to split the weekend series.

Allen, who was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week last Tuesday, went 8-of-14 from the floor while knocking down five 3-pointers and grabbing six rebounds.

Senior Kane Williams added 19 points going 8-of-9 from the free throw line, while sophomore Jalen Thomas, earning a second-straight start, just missed a double-double with 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds

Georgia State's 7-2 start thru nine games is tied for the second-best start in program history.

Coastal Carolina was once again led by Devonta Jones who finished with 22 points and seven rebounds an afternoon after recording a double-double. However, the Chanticleers were held to just 39.6 percent shooting and were outscored in the paint 32-20.

For the second-straight day the Panthers were playing without the services of starter Eliel Nsoseme and JoJo Toppin. A night after being outrebounded 52-35, Georgia State was only outrebounded by one, 35-34, including an edge on the defensive glass.

Georgia State got off to an early 14-2 lead as Allen knocked down three 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the game.

The Panthers pushed the lead to as many as 14 with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening half following a lay-up by Williams before Coastal started to chip into the lead.

The Chanticleers cut the lead to five, 22-17 with a 6-0 run with 7:56 to play. Trailing by six, Garrick Green knocked down 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to tie the game 34-34 with just under a minute to play in the half sending the teams into the locker room tied.

The Panthers scored the first 16 points of the second half before Green knocked down a 3-pointer for Coastal. From late in the first half until 9:09 to play in the game, the Chanticleers went 14 minutes without a 2-point field goal.

Georgia State would lead by double figures until a lay-up by Jones with 1:01 to play as the Panthers knocked down free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
