Men's Basketball

Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at App State 80-71

Eliel Nsoseme led the Panthers with 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Box Score BOONE, N.C.-Appalachian State used a late 8-0 run to earn an 80-71 win over Georgia State on Friday night at the Holmes Convocation Center.

Redshirt-junior Eliel Nsoseme just missed a double-double with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds for Georgia State (8-3, 2-2 Sun Belt) but it wasn't enough to over come 16 turnovers and just 4-of-14 shooting from 3-point range.

Appalachian State (11-5, 5-2 Sun Belt) moved into first place all by themselves in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference standings as Justin Forrest led all scorers with 23 points. The Mountaineers snapped a four-game losing streak to the Panthers, including three-straight in Boone.

Trailing 66-65 with four minutes to play, Appalachian State used an 8-0 run to take a 73-66 lead with 1:01 remaining which proved too much for the Panthers to overcome. The Mountaineers made their free throws down the stretch and finished the game 18-of-26 from the line.

Four Panthers finished in double figures as senior Kane Williams returned to the line-up and scored 14 points, while freshman Collin Moore earned a second-straight start and scored 11. Senior Corey Allen added 10 points knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

The Mountaineers also finished with four in double figures as Adrian Delph finished with 17 points and Michael Almonacy came off the bench to add 13.

The Mountaineers took an early 3-2 lead and would not lead again in the first half until just under two minutes to play.

A 3-pointer by Moore gave the Panthers a 17-12 lead midway thru the first half. Dominating the boards in the first 20 minutes by a 19-8 advantage, the Panthers pushed the lead to as many as seven following a 6-0 run capped by a Jalen Thomas lay-up with 5:41 to play. Thomas finished with six points and six rebounds.

Knocking down 8-of-15 from 3-point range, the Mountaineers finished the half strong and went into the locker room with a 37-35 lead.

After the Mountaineers took a 49-44 lead with 14:51 to play, the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run capped by a Nsoseme lay-up to go ahead 50-49 with under 13 minutes left in the game.

Appalachian State retook the lead by as many as four again, before momentum swung the Panthers way. After taking a charge on the other end, Nsoseme's lay-up gave GSU the lead again. It was a part of a 6-0 run that gave the Panthers a 64-61 lead with 5:29 remaining.

Unfortunately, things turned the Mountaineers way over the final four minutes as they took the first of two games this week and four games over the next two weeks.

Game Highlights
  • Despite the loss, Georgia State still leads the all-time series 7-6.
  • Georgia State outrebounded App State 31-26, but the Mountaineers made nine more free throws on 15 more attempts.
  • The Panthers double-up the Mountaineers on points in the paint by a 48-24.
  • After scoring 14 points, Kane Williams now has 1,093 career points, 41 shy of Ryan Harrow for 16th on GSU's all-time list. He is the 23rd Panther to reach the milestone.
Georgia State and Appalachian State will meet again on Saturday at 4 p.m., at the Holmes Convocation Center. The game will air live on ESPN+.
