ATLANTA - Meisheia Griffin tallied 19 kills while hitting over .500 to lead the Georgia State volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 28-26, 25-21) victory over Arkansas State Friday night at GSU Sports Arena.
Georgia State improves to 5-14, 2-7 Sun Belt on the season, while Arkansas State falls to 13-9, 4-6 Sun Belt.
Setter Claire Lewis had another stellar performance as she logged her eighth double-double of the season with 28 assists and 13 digs. Ava Vlkovic held down the Panther back row once again, leading the Panthers with 19 digs.
Julianna Truscott and Leah Wilcox also contributed significantly as the duo combined for 18 kills.
Jenna Brown notched her first career double-double as the freshman setter tallied 15 assists and 10 digs for the contest.
Set one was tightly contested as neither team was able to pull away for most of the set. After a kill from Griffin tied it at 16, the Panthers went on a 9-4 run to take set one, 25-20. Georgia State was led by Griffin as she notched four kills. Defensively, Lewis had a solid performance in set one as she tallied seven digs. The star freshman also added four assists in set one.
Like set one, set two was a back-and-forth affair. However, unlike set one, Arkansas State came out victorious. Georgia State rallied late in the set, but eventually fell, 23-25. Griffin's stellar performance from set one carried over into set two as she registered six kills while hitting .667. Truscott also contributed significantly for the Panthers in set two as she logged three kills.
Set three was the most competitive set as it featured 19 tied scores and eight lead changes. Georgia State came out victorious thanks to Griffin, who tallied five kills while hitting .625. After a kill from Macey Putt of Arkansas State tied the set at 24, the Panthers put together a 4-2 run to notch the set victory.
Up 2-1 entering set four, Georgia State came out aggressive and jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the set. Although the Red Wolves put together a series of runs, the Panthers maintained the lead and won the set, 25-21, for their second consecutive victory. Clara Bednarek led the Panthers in set four as the sophomore tallied five kills while hitting .500.
Georgia State will look to extend its win streak to three on Saturday as the Panthers welcome Sun Belt foe Little Rock to GSU Sports Arena.
