ATLANTA - Despite a resilient effort, the Georgia State volleyball team fell to South Alabama, 1-3 (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 14-25) Friday evening at GSU Sports Arena.
The Panthers fall to 7-18, 4-11 Sun Belt on the season, while South Alabama improves to 21-6, 14-1 Sun Belt.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by Meisheia Griffin and Clara Bednarek as they both tallied nine kills, respectively. Griffin also added five blocks defensively for the Panthers, while Bednarek added three digs and two blocks.
Erin Wyatt and Leah Wilcox also had solid performances as they each tallied six kills and 11 digs.
Set one was tightly contested as it featured a match-high seven lead changes. In the early going of set one, neither team was able to pull away; however, after a kill from Griffin tied the set at 16, South Alabama went on a 9-2 run to win the set, 25-18.
Like set one, the two teams battled to an even ledger late in set two as a Griffin kill tied the set at 18. South Alabama then put together a 7-3 run to win the set, 25-21. The Panthers were led by Griffin in set two as she tallied four kills while hitting .400.
Down 0-2, Georgia State put together a stellar performance offensively and defensively in set three to get back in the match. Like sets one and two, set three was tied late in the set, 19-19; however, this time, the Panthers were the team making the run as they scored six unanswered to win the set, 25-19.
Georgia State was unable to carry over its momentum from set three as South Alabama quickly jumped out to the lead in set four and never looked back. The Jaguars went on to win the set, 25-14, to take the match.
The Panthers will look to bounce back tomorrow at 6:30 as they host Troy in the regular-season finale at GSU Sports Arena.
Seniors Griffin, Wilcox and Truth Hafey will be recognized before, and after, the contest against Troy tomorrow.
