Panthers Fall at Mississippi State 79-50

Box Score STARKVILLE, Miss.-Georgia State was held to just 32.8 percent shooting as Mississippi State earned a 79-50 win over the Panthers on Tuesday night at Humphrey Coliseum.

Georgia State (5-4) saw its two-game winning streak against SEC opponents snapped. Senior Corey Allen led the Panthers with 13 points and five rebounds.

Mississippi State (7-3) snapped a two-game losing streak as Iverson Molinar scored 18 points and Derek Fountain just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Along with controlling the boards with a 41-27 advantage, Mississippi State went 26-of-30 from the free throw line, while the Panthers managed to go just 4-of-10.

Redshirt-junior Nelson Phillips added nine points and four rebounds for Georgia State, while Kane Williams scored seven.

D.J. Jeffries added 15 points for Mississippi State which went 5-of-10 from 3-point range and shot 54.5 percent from the floor.

Phillips knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers early in the game giving the Panthers an 6-4 lead just two minutes into the game. Unfortunately, Georgia State did not hit another 3-pointer the remainder of the half, missing its next nine shots from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs used an 8-0 run to take a 14-8 lead with 14:27 to play in the first half and pushed the lead to 19-12 as Georgia State went more than five minutes without a field goal.

A 3-pointer by D.J. Jeffries increased the Bulldogs lead to 32-18 with 4:09 to play before Mississippi State went into the locker room with a 43-22 lead.

Capped by a 3-pointer from Allen, Georgia State used an early 8-0 run in the second half to cut the Bulldogs lead to 45-30 with 16:33 to play.

Mississippi State quickly responded with an 11-0 run of its own and pushed the lead to 58-33 with 11:15 remaining.

Georgia State would get no closer than 24 points with just over five minutes to play.

Jamall Clyce came off the bench to score six points and grab four rebounds for the Panthers which went just 6-of-23 from long range.

Game Notes
  • Georgia State and Mississippi State were meeting for the fourth time. All four games have come in the last 20 years and in Mississippi.
  • Senior Kane Williams has now played in 129 games tied with Markus Crider for third-most in school history and just three shy of Jeff Thomas' school record of 132.
  • Williams also made his 91st start, tied with D'Marcus Simonds for the 7th-most in school history. He is 14 starts shy of Rodney Hamilton's school-record of 105.
  • Corey Allen eclipsed 1,700 career points and is among the top 30 active career scorers in the country.
