After More Than 330 Days, GSU Softball is Back

Georgia State opens its 2021 softball season Friday at 3 p.m. vs. Radford.

ATLANTA -- After its 2020 season was cut short due to Covid-19 last March, Georgia State's softball team is finally taking the field again as the Panthers host Radford for Opening Day Friday at 3 p.m.

Friday's game, which was originally scheduled for 5 p.m. but moved up due to weather, will be the first game for the Panthers since March 11. NCAA softball was halted on March 12 due to Covid-19 after Georgia State had completed just 23 games.

The Panthers return several key players from a year ago including seniors Baylee Sexton and Sydney Stavro, who elected to use their extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. Daisy Hess, who led the team in home runs and RBI as a freshman in the shortened 2020 campaign, leads a core of talented young Panthers to compliment the returning veterans.

After Georgia State hosts Radford on Friday, the Panthers then host Boise State for a doubleheader Saturday with Game 1 beginning at 1 p.m. GSU then heads to Georgia Tech on Sunday to face Radford again at 1 p.m. and Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. The game against the Yellow Jackets will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Live stats for all contests this weekend can be found here.

Fans are permitted at the Bob Heck Softball Complex. Georgia State Athletics asks that visitors adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols as directed by the CDC and the Sun Belt Conference including wearing a mask and social distancing.
