Buck, Mooney Lead Panthers to Opening Day Sweep

Georgia State held Radford to just one run in Friday's doubleheader to open the 2021 season.

ATLANTA -- Taking the field for the first time since March 11, 2020, Georgia State's softball team swept a doubleheader against Radford, winning 3-1 in Game 1 and 6-0 in Game 2.

Pitchers Sophie Mooney and Emily Buck were dominant in the circle. Both went the distance and Mooney allowed just one run on five hits while Buck tossed a one-hit shutout.

Buck took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of Game 2 before the Highlanders singled down the third base line to get in the hits column.

Mooney tallied five strikeouts and Buck finished with six.

The Panthers looked good at the plate as well. GSU knocked 11 hits in the first game and eight more in the second.

Sophomore Emily Brown went a combined 4-for-8 with three RBI. Sophomore Bailee Richardson recorded GSU's first home run of the season with a two-run shot in Game 2. She tallied three RBI in the 6-0 win.

Brown provided the spark in Game 1, driving in Baylee Sexton to kick off a three-run third inning.

In Game 2, the freshman Carolyn Deady hit a sac fly for her first collegiate RBI in the second inning, giving Georgia State a 1-0 lead over Radford. Richardson broke it open with her two-run homer in the third to make it 4-0. She drove in another run in the fifth and Brown capped off her day with an RBI-single in the sixth.

Georgia State and Boise State will play a doubleheader Saturday at the Bob Heck Softball Complex with Game 1 scheduled for 4 p.m. and Game 2 for 6 p.m. Those games were pushed to later in the day due to weather.
