Panthers Fall in DH at No. 2 Vandy

Glass, Merejo Homer

NASHVILLE -- Georgia State dropped a doubleheader at No. 2 Vanderbilt, 12-2 and 17-6, at Hawkins Field.

After winning Friday and then dropping a one-run game Saturday, Georgia State (3-6) faced the daunting task of playing a doubleheader against Vandy's (7-1) two pitching aces, Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter. The hurlers expected to be the first two college players selected in this year's MLB Draft lived up to their billing.

Home runs by Ryan Glass and Elian Merejo highlighted the afternoon for the Panthers. Merejo's solo shot was his second homer of the series after his two-run blast in the top of the ninth inning in Friday's 4-2 victory.

Will Mize had three hits on the day, Josh Smith had two hits while drawing four walks, and Kyle Hilton drove in two runs.

Rocker (2-0) and Leiter (2-0) each pitched each five scoreless innings and combined for 13 strikeouts.

In Game 1, the Panthers trailed 6-0 after six before making a dent in the seventh, when Hilton's two RBI pulled GSU within 6-2. But the Commodores answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Georgia State continues its challenging non-conference slate Tuesday at No. 15 Georgia Tech in a 4 p.m. game at Mac Nease Ballpark on ACC Network Extra. That will be the Panthers 10th straight game against a nationally-ranked, Power 5 opponent.
