Panthers Fall 6-1 at Kentucky

Griffin Cheney had two extra-base hits, including RBI-triple.

LEXINGTON, KY. – Georgia State dropped its second straight game at Kentucky, falling 6-1 Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park.

Second baseman Griffin Cheney had two extra-base hits on the day and drove in the Panthers' (4-12) only run with his ninth-inning triple. He also had a double in the fifth inning.

Kentucky (10-2) starter Mason Hazelwood (3-0) was outstanding, tossing six scoreless innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts. The 6-5 senior left-hander allowed just three hits and walk only one. Three UK relievers combined for seven more strikeouts over the final three innings.

Georgia State starter Cameron Jones (0-2) allowed just one run on three hits through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. After T.J. Collett's two-run homer gave Kentucky a 4-0 lead, Jones gave way to Joseph Brandon, who pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Panthers, playing their 16th straight game against a Power 5 conference opponent, managed six hits but struggled to string anything together. GSU had the leadoff hitter on base in four different innings but left eight men on base.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. on SECN+. Freshman right-hander Mason Patel, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, takes the mound for the Panthers.
