Kevin Huynh Clinches GSU Victory over UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Georgia State men's tennis downed North Florida 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. This marked the first of a trio of consecutive matches in the Sunshine State.

With the win the Panthers improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Ospreys fall to 2-5.  GSU owns the overall series between the two squads, 7-5, winning seven of the last 11 tilts. 

Georgia State came out to the quick one-point lead after grinding out tough doubles competition. After dropping the first line of doubles, No. 30 Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds rebounded from their Friday loss with a 6-4 result on court one. With the advantage on the line, Kevin Huynh and Harvey Maugh fought in a tiebreaker in position No. 2, ultimately emerging victorious in the effort. 

Maughan, who registered GSU's lone point in Friday's contest, collected his fifth victory of the season and fourth in a row to extend the Georgia State lead. The Ospreys responded by taking court two with a 6-2, 6-1 result. Junior Vazha Shubladze put the Panthers within striking distance of the team win with a straight set victory on line one. 

Making his first singles appearance of the season, senior Kevin Huynh notched a 6-4, 6-4 win on court six to clinch the team victory. Play continued after the secured GSU win, where UNF added to their point total by outlasting freshman Mihai Marinescu in position No. 5. Duarte finished the day by edging out his opposition to take the final point of the contest. 

"Very proud of the way our team competed out there today against a tricky and well coached team in UNF," said head coach Jon Wolff. "It was great to see our team step up on the important points in both singles and doubles towards the end. We preached positivity all week in practice and that definitely helped us out there today in a total team effort. Lastly, a special shout out to our senior, Kevin Huynh, for delivering the clinching point in his first singles match this year."
