Smith's Grand Slam Caps 9-Run, 9th-Inning Rally for Wild Win

BOONE, N.C. – In one of the most improbable comebacks in school history, Georgia State scored nine runs in the ninth inning, taking the lead on a grand slam by Josh Smith, to rally for a 15-13 victory over Appalachian State in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.

App State (13-14, 6-3 Sun Belt) won Sunday's first game, 9-7.

Smith, the sophomore left fielder from College Park, Ga., and North Springs High School, had five hits and six RBI on the day.

Ryan Glass homered twice and drove in seven runs in the doubleheader, as the junior first baseman had a solo homer, a grand slam, an RBI-groundout and a run-scoring single that started the ninth-inning rally. Freshman Cameron Jones hit a three-run homer, the first of his career, in the ninth inning.

Georgia State (8-25, 4-5 Sun Belt) will return to action Tuesday with a midweek contest at Georgia at 5 p.m. on SECN+.

Game 1: App State 9, Georgia State 7

Ryan Glass hit two home runs, including a grand slam, but Appalachian State managed a 9-7 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

With GSU trailing 3-0, Glass hit a solo homer in the fifth inning, and then in the sixth, he blasted a grand slam to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead.

That was the second career grand slam for Glass, who also hit one last season vs. North Alabama. He is the first Panther to hit two homers in a game since Elian Merejo hit two vs. Coastal Carolina on April 28, 2019. Glass now has three homers on the season and 14 in his career.

But App State answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a pair of two-run homers, to move ahead 8-5.

Josh Smith delivered a two-run single in the seventh to pull the Panthers within 8-7. After App State added an insurance run in the eighth, Georgia State loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but the Mountaineers held on for the win.

Game 2: Georgia State 15, App State 13

Josh Smith's go-ahead grand slam capped a nine-run ninth inning as Georgia State rallied from a 12-6 deficit for a 15-13 victory over Appalachian State in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Georgia State took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI grounder by Ryan Glass, but App State scored three in the seventh and four in the eighth to take a 12-6 lead into the ninth.

Griffin Cheney and Smith led off with singles, and with one out Glass singled to score Cheney for his second RBI of the game and seventh of the doubleheader.

Then Jones, primarily a pitcher who started Friday's game on the mound, hit his first career homer with a three-run blast to pull the Panthers within 12-10.

Branson Bowling drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Dalton Pearson singled to right field to score Bowling. Then Kyle Riesselmann singled and Griffin Cheney was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

That brought Smith to the plate for the second time in the inning, and he crushed the 2-1 pitch to center field for his first career grand slam and Georgia State's second of the day.

App State managed one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Pablo Barquero retired the Mountaineers to earn his first save.

Smith finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. Jones also had an RBI-double for a career-high four RBI.
