Merejo Homer Lifts Panthers to 7-5 Win to Even Troy Series

Senior DH was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI

ATLANTA – Elian Merejo hit the go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning to lift Georgia State to a 7-5 victory over Troy Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex, evening the Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Merejo, the senior designated hitter, went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including a run-scoring single in the first inning. Junior second baseman Griffin Cheney also homered for the Panthers (9-27, 5-6 Sun Belt) with a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning among his three hits on the day.

GSU starter Trey Horton had a career-high seven strikeouts. In six innings, the junior rightly allowed three runs on four hits but was not involved in the decision.

Freshman right-hander Chad Treadway (1-4) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his first career victory, and freshman righty Duncan Lutz tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save, with help from an outstanding diving catch in deep center field by Kyle Riesselmann.

In a 3-3 game, Troy (16-17, 4-7) got a two-run homer from Logan Cerny to take a 5-3 in the top of the seventh, but the Panthers answered immediately.

Cameron Jones led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single and moved to third on an opposite field single by Cheney. After Jones scored on an error, Merejo hit the first pitch down the left field line and over the fence for his team-leading sixth homer of the season.
