Marchman Delivers Walk-Off to Even Series with Georgia Southern

Marchman's RBI-Single in 10th Brings Produces 7-6 Victory

ATLANTA – Blaine Marchman's RBI-single in the 10th inning lifted Georgia State to a 7-6 walk-off win over Georgia Southern Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex, evening their Sun Belt Conference series at one game apiece.

The series will be decided with a 2 p.m. game Saturday on ESPN+.

Marchman, the second-year freshman catcher from Loganville High School, enjoyed the best game of his career with three hits, including a double, while senior Elian Merejo had three hits and two RBI to lead the Panthers (6-22, 2-3 Sun Belt).

In the 10th inning, freshman Dalton Pearson got the rally started with a one-out double on a fly ball that landed just inside the right field line. After Josh Smith was intentionally walked, Marchman singled through the left side to score Pearson from second with the winning run.

Left-hander Dawson Sweatt (1-1) pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first win. GSU starter Trey Horton went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits and just one walk. Reliever Chad Treadway provided a key outing with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Georgia State took a 6-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Making his first start at third base, freshman Preston Joye led off with a double for his first career hit. Kyle Riesselmann and Griffin Cheney walked to load the bases, and then Merejo singled to left center to score Joye. Then Will Mize and Ashby Smith brought home runs with fielder's choice plays.

But Georgia Southern (13-12, 4-4 Sun Belt) tied the game with four runs in the sixth, aided by two GSU errors.

The Panthers jumped in front with a run in each of the first three innings. Merejo smacked an RBI double in the first inning, and he doubled again in the third and scored on a wild pitch.
