Cheney, Merejo, Fisher Homer in Loss at Mercer

Box Score MACON – Georgia State got home runs from Griffin Cheney and Elian Merejo in a 17-4 loss at Mercer Wednesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Cheney, the junior second baseman, led off the third inning with a homer to right center, his fourth home run of the season and second in the last four games. In those four contests, he has gone 10-for-16 at the plate.

Merejo also homered for the second time in four games. He followed Cheney with a two-run blast to left field, the team-leading seventh of the season for the senior first baseman.

After those two homers in the third, the Panthers (10-29) trailed 4-3, but Mercer (21-15) answered with five runs in the bottom half.

Lavoisier Fisher added his first career homer with a solo shot down the right field line in the eighth inning.

Georgia State collected 10 hits in the game to 13 for Mercer, but the Bears hit five homers in the game, including a grand slam, and benefited from 11 walks.

The Panthers played a second midweek game for the only time this season, and with the pitching staff stretched thin, GSU had to turn to some of its less-experienced pitchers and finished the game with infielders DeAngelo Abboud and Kalen Puckett making mound appearances.

Georgia State and Mercer will conclude their four-game season series May 11 at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers return to Sun Belt Conference action with a weekend series at East Division leader South Alabama, beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
