Cheney Starts 100th Straight Game in Loss at Mercer

MACON – Georgia State fell at Mercer 5-1 Tuesday at OrthoGeorgia Park.
 
Second baseman Griffin Cheney started his 100th straight game for Georgia State (7-23, 3-3 Sun Belt). The junior from John's Creek (Northview High School) entered the GSU lineup in Game 3 of the 2019 season and has been a mainstay ever since, including starts at shortstop and third base in addition to his current role at second base.

 
Cheney singled in his first at-bat, reaching base for at least once for the 89th time during that 100-game streak.
 
With GSU trailing 2-0, Cheney led off the sixth with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Smith to pull the Panthers within 2-1.
 
But Mercer (17-11) responded with three runs in the seventh, aided by two walks and a hit batter, to take a 5-1 lead.
 
The Panthers got strong relief outings from left-hander Seth Clark (1.1 scoreless, hitless innings) and righties Duncan Lutz (1.2 scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.) and Chandler Dawson (1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts).

Georgia State and Mercer are scheduled to play two more times this season.
 
The Panthers return to Sun Belt Conference play with a weekend series at Appalachian State, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. in Boone, N.C.
