Glass Homers in 7-4 Loss to Mercer

ATLANTA – Ryan Glass homered for Georgia State, but the Panthers fell 7-4 to Mercer in the final non-conference game of 2021 Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Georgia State (12-35) pitchers Trey Horton and Tyler Koch shut down the Bears (31-17) for the first six innings before Mercer scored the game's first run in the seventh and then added two in the eighth and four in the ninth.

Horton, the junior right-hander, started and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Koch followed with two scoreless frames, including three strikeouts, in the 77th career outing for the fifth-year senior lefty, who ranks third in GSU history.

In a scoreless game, Mercer finally got on the board in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Angelo DiSpigna to take a 1-0 lead. After Bears scored two more in the eighth, Glass led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo blast to center field for his fourth homer of the season, pulling GSU within 3-1.

But Mercer added four insurance runs in the ninth, including a three-run, pinch-hit homer by Jordan Ammons, to take a 7-1 lead.

The Panthers mounted a rally in the ninth as Josh Smith and Cameron Jones led off with back-to-back infield singles. Then Elian Merejo smacked a double to right field to score both runs and make it 7-3. With one out, Glass singled through the left side and score Merejo to bring the Panthers within 7-4, but they could get no closer.

Georgia State returns to Sun Belt Conference action Friday, when the Panthers open a series at Texas State.
