Mooney Leads Panthers to Second Round

TROY, Ala. – Sophie Mooney was dominant in the circle Tuesday as Georgia State took down Georgia Southern 4-1 in the first round of the Sun Belt Championship.
 
Mooney went the distance and allowed just one run while striking out eight. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Her eight strikeouts is most by a GSU pitcher in a Sun Belt tournament game since the team joined the conference in 2014.
 
"I felt more focused today after our result against Georgia Southern last week. I was loose and relaxed and I trusted my pitches," Mooney said.
 
Daisy Hess continued to lead the charge for GSU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Hess doubled with two outs in the top of the third to score Emily Brown for the game's first run.
 
After the Eagles pulled even in the fourth, Hess led off the top of the sixth with a triple and came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
 
A walk and a single set the table for Skylar Mosel to double home two more runs and put GSU up by three.
 
Mooney got a strikeout, popout to herself, and a groundout to herself to shut the door on the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, sending GSU to the second round.
 
Georgia State will face Texas State, the No. 2 seed, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The bracket moves to double elimination in the second round.
