Panthers Fall in Sun Belt Tourney, Wrap up Season of Building for the Future

MONTGOMERY, ALA. --- In its second game of pool play at the Sun Belt Championships, Georgia State fell 10-1 to Georgia Southern Wednesday at Riverwalk Stadium.

GSU's season comes to an end, but the strides made by this very young team in head coach Brad Stromdahl's first full season are undeniable. After playing perhaps the toughest non-conference schedule in the nation, the Panthers (18-37) posted a .500 record in Sun Belt play and won six of their last seven games, including Tuesday's Sun Belt tournament win over ULM. All this while playing numerous freshmen and sophomores.

"I want to thank everyone in our organization for having such an unbelievably good attitude all year long and giving everything they could possibly give," Stromdahl said. "It's never easy to finish a season, but I feel very comfortable with where we are and where we are going.

"We absolutely have established the foundation for the future," he continued. "We started seven freshmen. Over the course of the last month, month-and-a-half, these kids have absolutely played their hearts out for themselves and for each other and have put our program in a position to continue to grow, and that's what's most exciting."

The Panthers jumped in front early as freshman catcher Blaine Marchman belted a solo home run, his second of the season, in the second inning.

But Georgia Southern (32-22) scored three in the bottom half and three more in the third, aided by two errors, to take a 6-1 lead. The Eagles will advance to Saturday's semifinals.

GSU fifth-year senior Tyler Koch made his 82nd career appearance to move into second place in GSU history. Only record-holder Jerry Stuckey (92) has pitched in more games in a Panther uniform. Koch pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.

Seniors Ryan Glass and Elian Merejo had two hits each in their final game for GSU.
